When Your Child Can't "Just Be Flexible": Understanding Cognitive Rigidity

You still have to get out the door in the morning. You still have to navigate schedule changes. You still have to help your child function in a world that isn't going to perfectly accommodate their need for predictability.

In this episode — the practical companion to the rule-following-brain episode before it — child psychologist Dr. Kirsten Kuzirian looks at why the usual approaches to building flexibility fall short for many neurodivergent children, and the direction the research actually points.

Why don't the usual approaches work?

The episode starts with what most families have already tried.

"Just be more flexible." Teachers have said it; maybe therapists have said it. It can't work, because a child can't decide their way into a brain that processes change differently.

Exposure on its own. The hope is that enough exposure to change teaches "change is okay." For many neurodivergent children, repeated exposure without proper support teaches something else — "the world is unpredictable and I can't trust it" — and anxiety rises instead of rigidity falling.

Consequences for inflexibility. Taking things away, time-outs for coming apart over a schedule change. This adds shame to an already overwhelming experience.

Reasoning them out of it. "It doesn't really matter if we leave at 3:00 or 3:02." The logic misses the point — the reaction isn't about logic. It's about how their nervous system processes inconsistency.

As Dr. Kuzirian puts it: if any of these had worked, you wouldn't be listening to this episode.

The counterintuitive finding: flexibility is built from structure

Here is the reframe at the center of the episode. You don't build flexibility by removing predictability. You build it by creating such a solid foundation of predictability that your child feels safe enough to tolerate variation.

When everything feels chaotic, the brain holds on tighter to whatever it can control — rigidity increases as a protective response. When the foundation is stable — clear rules, consistent expectations, a knowable day — there's more room for small variations, because the nervous system isn't running threat detection.

This is also why the child who seems completely inflexible at school may be more adaptable at home. Home feels more predictable, which frees up the cognitive resources flexibility runs on.

What can the environment change before the child has to?

Four questions from the episode worth asking about any hard moment:

  • How much warning do they get? Many rigid children handle change well when they have time to process it. The problem often isn't change — it's sudden change.

  • Do they understand why? "Because I said so" is especially hard for a child with high justice sensitivity. Changes with a reason that seems fair are far easier to absorb.

  • Are rules applied consistently? Rules that differ by sibling or by weekday send the brain hunting for the pattern — and that energy isn't available for adapting.

  • What's the current stress and sensory load? A depleted child has close to zero flexibility capacity. The change they handled fine last week can be impossible today.

This is recognition, Dr. Kuzirian notes, that flexibility requires cognitive resources — and the environment determines how many are available.

"If I accommodate, how will they learn to handle the real world?"

Support now doesn't mean support forever. We don't expect children to walk before they crawl; we scaffold. Accommodation is the foundation for growth — a child who feels secure and understood has the emotional resources to stretch, and a child fighting just to get through the day has nothing left over for growth. The goal is appropriate challenge, from a place of support.

The direction the research points

The episode deliberately offers a direction rather than a one-size program — each child's brain is different, and a generic program can't account for your child's specific architecture. The direction:

  1. Environmental predictability first. Get the foundation solid before asking for flexibility.

  2. Skill-building happens in calm moments. Flexibility can't be taught mid-crisis.

  3. Work with their sense of justice, not against it. Help them find workable ways to express the need for fairness.

  4. Introduce variability gradually, inside structure. Small, controlled, positive surprises; choices within clear parameters; change with explanation and advance notice.

  5. Co-regulation before self-regulation. Your calm is how they access their own capacity.

It's not about trying harder. It's about trying differently.

When to bring in more support

This work is nuanced — what helps an autistic child who needs predictability for safety differs from what helps a child with ADHD who reacts intensely to unfairness, and it's possible to push too hard or to accommodate past the growth opportunity. Many families benefit from professional guidance: a therapist who understands neurodivergent brains, or an occupational therapist who can address the underlying sensory and regulation picture. The goal underneath the goal

Through all of it, the aim is more than a more flexible child — it's a child who feels understood and supported while flexibility develops. Every time you honor their brain's need for predictability while gently expanding their capacity, you make a deposit into what Dr. Kuzirian calls the Trust Fund: I get how hard this is. I'm going to help you, not fight you. A child who feels deeply understood by their parent can handle a lot.
