The Rule-Following Brain: Why Your Neurodivergent Child Isn't Being Defiant
The board game where everyone else plays the rule loosely — except your child, who cannot. The sibling with the slightly bigger portion. The classmate who got in trouble for something they didn't do, and your child is still upset about it at bedtime. And everyone around you offering the same advice: they need to learn to let things go.
"Stubborn" is one of those words that sounds like a character flaw. But in this episode, child psychologist Dr. Kirsten Kuzirian asks whether it's describing what we think it's describing — or whether it's actually a description of a brain that processes rules, fairness, and consistency differently than we expect.

Is my child being stubborn, or is their brain processing rules differently?
When neurodivergent children encounter rules and expectations, several brain systems are working differently than they do in neurotypical children. The episode walks through three of them.
Executive function. These are circuits in the prefrontal cortex that help us shift between tasks, hold multiple pieces of information at once, and adapt to change. In many neurodivergent brains, these networks require more energy to operate. Shifting from one thing to another isn't just harder — it's costly. Holding several rules in mind at once takes real cognitive resources, and an unexpected change isn't merely annoying; for some children, it's overwhelming.
Pattern recognition. Many neurodivergent brains have enhanced pattern recognition — they notice inconsistencies that others miss. They detect when rules are being applied unevenly. They see the gap between what someone said and what they're actually doing. This is a cognitive strength, and it also means they're processing more information about rules and fairness than the average person. That's exhausting.
Response inhibition. This is the brain's brake pedal — the ability to stop one response and start another. Research shows it works differently across neurotypes. When your child can't "just let it go," it's worth considering that their brake pedal may be functioning differently than yours.
So when a child falls apart over a two-minute schedule change, they're not being dramatic. Their brain is processing that change as a real disruption, one that requires cognitive and emotional resources to manage.
What is justice sensitivity — and why does my child react so strongly to unfairness?
There's a concept in the research literature called justice sensitivity, and it belongs in parenting conversations. Studies show that neurodivergent individuals often have higher justice sensitivity than neurotypical people — some research suggests 1.5 to 2 times higher. Their brains are wired to detect unfairness more acutely and respond to it more intensely.
Think about your child's reactions to unfairness — not just unfairness to them, but to anyone. Those reactions aren't random. They're accurate detections of inconsistency, processed through a brain that registers fairness violations strongly. Two things combine here: the enhanced pattern detection that notices the inconsistency in the first place, and differences in dopamine and norepinephrine systems that affect how intensely experiences register.
What looks like rigidity is often moral clarity. What looks like inflexibility is often integrity. They're holding the world to a standard of consistency and fairness — and whether that's a flaw depends entirely on your perspective.
How does rigidity show up differently in autistic, ADHD, and anxious children?
For autistic children, rule-following often comes from a real need for predictable systems. Rules make the world make sense. When rules are inconsistent or change without explanation, the world becomes unpredictable — and unpredictable feels unsafe. Their rigidity is often an attempt to create order and understanding in an environment that doesn't naturally provide it.
For children with ADHD, you might see more selective focus on rules, particularly around fairness. They might not care about certain rules at all but be intensely focused on others, especially when someone is being treated unjustly. Their reactions to perceived injustice can be immediate and intense, because the emotional response arrives before the cognitive processing can moderate it.
For anxious children, rules often function as safety. Following the rules means nothing bad will happen. When rules change, or when others don't follow them, anxiety spikes because the protective structure feels threatened. The rigidity is protective.
Understanding which pattern fits your child helps you respond in ways that address what's actually happening for them.
Why is my child rigid at school but flexible at home (or the reverse)?
Rigidity isn't constant. Most children are more flexible in some contexts and more rigid in others. In predictable environments with clear expectations and consistent rule application, many so-called "rigid" children are quite adaptable — they can handle changes when they understand why something is happening and what to expect next. In unpredictable environments, or environments where rules feel arbitrary or are applied inconsistently, rigidity increases. The brain is working overtime to find the pattern, to understand the system, to feel safe.
Which means the environment isn't neutral. It's either supporting flexibility or triggering rigidity. If your child is more rigid at school than at home, that's information. If they're more rigid around certain family members, that's information. If they're more flexible when they've had advance warning about changes, that's information too. The work isn't changing who your child is — it's learning what conditions help their brain function at its best.
What can I say instead of "stop being so rigid"?
When you understand that your child's rigidity comes from how their brain is wired, your response naturally shifts.
Instead of "Why can't you just be flexible?" you might find yourself saying, "Your brain really needs things to be fair, doesn't it?"
Instead of "Stop being so dramatic about the schedule," you might say, "I should have given you more warning. Changes are hard for your brain to process quickly."
Instead of "It doesn't matter that it's not exactly fair," you might acknowledge, "You're right, that wasn't consistent. I can see why that bothers you."
These responses are deposits into what Dr. Kuzirian calls the Trust Fund — the reserve of safety and security a child builds through your attuned responses over time. The message underneath each one is the same: I see how your brain works. I'm not going to fight against it. I'm going to work with it.
And something interesting happens over time. Children whose rigidity is understood and respected often become more flexible — not because they were forced to be, but because they feel safe enough to loosen their grip a little.
What can I actually do this week?
Four moves from the episode:
Stop fighting the rigidity itself. When you push against their need for consistency and fairness, you're communicating that their brain is wrong. That creates more stress, and stress creates more rigidity.
Get curious about the function. When they're upset about a rule or a change, ask yourself — are they seeking predictability? Reacting to injustice? Trying to make sense of inconsistency? The answer shapes what kind of response will help.
Look at the environment. What can you make more predictable? Where can you be more consistent? What changes can you give advance notice about? Adjusting the environment is support for a brain that processes the world differently.
Honor the strength underneath. Your child's sense of justice, their attention to consistency, their ability to detect unfairness — these are valuable qualities. The world needs people who notice when things aren't right and care enough to say so.
The standard they're holding
The goal isn't to make your child stop caring about rules and fairness. The goal is to help them navigate a world that doesn't always share their standards, while honoring how their brain actually works.
